AMD Ryzen vs Intel Core laptops: which should you buy?

The brand on the sticker matters less than the tier, the generation and one letter at the end of the model number. Here is how to read them.

Neither brand is better across the board. A Ryzen 5 and a Core i5 of the same age and power class perform closely enough that most people would not notice the difference. What matters more is the tier (5 beats 3), the generation (newer beats older) and the letter at the end (U for battery life, H for performance). Pick the laptop with the better memory, storage and screen for your budget, whichever chip is inside.

AMD or Intel is one of the most common questions people ask when choosing a laptop, and the model names do not make it easy. A Ryzen 7 can be slower than a Ryzen 5, and two Core i5 laptops can be years apart. This guide shows how to read the names so you can compare any two laptops in a minute.

Decode the model number first

Both brands hide the important information in the model number. Here is what each part means, using two real examples.

Intel Core i5-1235U

i5Tier: 3, 5, 7 or 9. Higher is faster.
12Generation. Higher is newer.
35Model within that tier.
UPower class. U is built for battery life.

AMD Ryzen 7 7730U

7Year the range launched. 7 means 2023.
7Tier. Matches the Ryzen 7 name.
3Core design. Higher is newer. This is the digit to check.
0Lower (0) or upper (5) model.
UPower class, as with Intel.

On four-digit AMD chips, the third digit matters more than the first. A Ryzen 5 7520U uses a much older core design (2) than a Ryzen 5 7540U (4), even though both look like current models.

The letter at the end

The suffix tells you what kind of laptop the chip was built for. It often matters more than the brand.

Letter Built for What it means for you
U Thin, light laptops Longer battery life, cooler and quieter. Right for office work and study.
V Very efficient thin laptops (newer Intel Core Ultra) Long battery life with capable built-in graphics.
P Slim performance laptops (older Intel) Between U and H.
H, HS Gaming and creator laptops Much more power, more heat and shorter battery life. Usually paired with a dedicated graphics card.
HX Top-end gaming and workstation laptops Desktop-class performance in large, heavy laptops.

The newer names

Both brands have changed their naming recently, so laptops on sale today carry a mix of old and new styles.

Name you will see What it is
Intel Core i3, i5, i7, i9 Intel's naming up to the 13th and 14th generations. Still common and still good.
Intel Core Ultra 5, 7, 9 Intel's current main line, with stronger built-in graphics and a processor for AI tasks.
Intel Core 3, 5, 7 (no "Ultra") Current chips based on earlier designs, without the Ultra extras. Solid for everyday work.
AMD Ryzen 3, 5, 7, 9 with four digits AMD's naming for 2023 and 2024 laptops. Check the third digit.
AMD Ryzen 5 220, Ryzen 7 250 AMD's newer three-digit naming for refreshed chips.
AMD Ryzen AI 5, 7, 9 AMD's current main line, with a processor for AI tasks.

Where each brand tends to be stronger

Intel Core

The wider choice of models, especially in business laptops.

  • Thunderbolt ports are common on mid-range and business models
  • Core Ultra chips brought a big step up in built-in graphics
  • More sizes, brands and price points to choose from

AMD Ryzen

Often strong performance for the price, particularly when many cores are in use.

  • Built-in Radeon graphics have long been a strength
  • Common in good-value gaming laptops
  • Fewer models, so there is less choice within a brand

These are tendencies and not rules. Individual laptops vary, which is why the model number is the better guide.

Which tier do you need?

What you do Tier to look for Also check
Email, documents, streaming, online classes Core i3, Core 3 or Ryzen 3 8GB of RAM and an SSD
Office work with many tabs, spreadsheets and video calls Core i5, Core Ultra 5 or Ryzen 5 16GB of RAM if the budget allows
Photo editing, programming, heavy multitasking Core i7, Core Ultra 7 or Ryzen 7 16GB of RAM or more
Gaming An H-class chip of tier 5 or 7 The graphics card matters more than the processor brand
Video editing, 3D and engineering software An H or HX chip of tier 7 or 9 A dedicated graphics card and 32GB of RAM

Compare them in the store

Both ranges below show current prices and stock. Open two laptops at a similar price and compare the tier, generation and suffix using the decoder above.

When two laptops cost about the same, the one with more memory, a larger SSD or a better screen is usually the better buy, even if its processor is a step lower.

Frequently asked questions

Is a Ryzen 5 the same as a Core i5?

They sit in the same tier and are aimed at the same buyers. Performance is close when the two chips are of a similar age and power class, so compare the generation and the suffix letter before the brand.

Is AMD or Intel better for a gaming laptop?

Both make strong gaming laptop processors. For games, the graphics card has a much bigger effect on performance than the processor brand, so choose the graphics card first.

Do I need a Core Ultra or Ryzen AI processor?

Only if you want the newest built-in graphics or on-device AI features. Not every chip with an AI processor qualifies a laptop as a Copilot+ PC, so check the product page if that feature matters to you. For ordinary work, an earlier Core i5 or Ryzen 5 is still a good choice.

Which brand gives better battery life?

It depends on the individual laptop. U-class and V-class chips and newer generations help, but battery size and screen type matter as much as the processor.

Can a Ryzen 7 be slower than a Ryzen 5?

Yes. An older or lower-power Ryzen 7 can be slower than a newer or higher-power Ryzen 5. The same is true of Intel's tiers, which is why the full model number matters.
