Yes, you can buy a good laptop for under R10 000, as long as it is for everyday work, study and streaming and not for gaming or video editing. On a Windows laptop, hold out for 8GB of RAM and an SSD. If most of what you do happens in a browser, a Chromebook costs less and runs well on more modest hardware.

Under R10 000 is the busiest part of the laptop market in South Africa, and the easiest place to buy the wrong thing. Two laptops at the same price can feel completely different to use. This guide explains what the money buys, which specs matter most, and what you give up at this price.

What R10 000 buys

At this price you are choosing between sensible trade-offs. No laptop here does everything, but the right one handles email, documents, spreadsheets, video calls, online learning and streaming without frustration.

8GBRAM to aim for on a Windows laptop.
256GBSSD storage is a realistic target for Windows.
15.6"The usual screen size for a budget Windows laptop.
11 to 12"The usual screen size for a budget Chromebook.
Spec Avoid Aim for Bonus
Memory (Windows) 4GB 8GB A free slot to add more later
Storage (Windows) A hard drive, or 64GB eMMC 256GB SSD 512GB SSD
Screen A dim 1366 x 768 panel on a 15.6-inch laptop Full HD (1920 x 1080) IPS panel
Processor An old Celeron in a Windows laptop Core i3 or Ryzen 3 and up Core i5 or Ryzen 5

These are the laptops under R10 000 in the store right now. The prices and stock below update on their own, so they are always current.

Windows laptop or Chromebook?

This is the first decision, because it changes which specs you need.

Windows laptop

Runs the full range of software, including programs installed on the laptop itself. The safe choice if a school, university or employer requires specific Windows software.

  • Needs 8GB of RAM to feel quick
  • Needs an SSD of 256GB or more
  • Works fully without an internet connection

Chromebook

Runs ChromeOS, which is built around the browser, web apps and Android apps. It starts quickly, updates itself and needs very little looking after.

  • Runs well on 4GB of RAM
  • 32GB or 64GB of storage is normal, because files live in the cloud
  • Best with a steady internet connection

Before buying a Chromebook for study or work, check whether any required software is Windows-only. Microsoft Office works on a Chromebook through the web versions, but the installed desktop versions do not.

The specs that matter, in order

If you cannot have everything, spend the budget in this order.

  1. Memory. On Windows, 8GB is the practical minimum. With 4GB, a few browser tabs and a video call are enough to slow the laptop down.
  2. Storage type. An SSD makes a bigger difference to everyday speed than a faster processor. Avoid Windows laptops that still use a hard drive.
  3. Screen. You look at it all day. Full HD is sharper than 1366 x 768, and the difference is easy to see on a 15.6-inch screen.
  4. Processor. A Core i5 or Ryzen 5 is a bonus at this price, but check how old it is. The model number tells you.

A low price can mean an older processor generation. A Ryzen 5 from several years ago is not the same as a current Ryzen 5. It will still handle everyday work, but do not pay a premium for the name alone. Our guide to AMD Ryzen and Intel Core laptop processors shows how to read the model number.

What you give up under R10 000

It helps to know the limits before you buy.

  • Gaming. These laptops use integrated graphics. Light and older games run, but modern games need a dedicated graphics card. See gaming laptops if that matters to you.
  • Video editing and design work. Possible for short, simple projects, but slow. Heavier creative work needs 16GB of RAM and a stronger processor.
  • Premium build. Expect plastic bodies and average speakers and webcams.
  • Room to grow. Some budget laptops have memory that cannot be upgraded. Check before you buy if you plan to keep it for years.

If your budget can stretch, the full laptop range opens up 16GB of RAM, newer processors and better screens.

Before you order: a quick checklist

  • I know whether I need Windows, or whether a Chromebook will do
  • Windows laptop: 8GB of RAM or more
  • Windows laptop: SSD storage of 256GB or more
  • The screen size suits how I will carry and use it
  • It has the ports I need, such as HDMI, USB-C or a card reader
  • I have checked the processor model number, not only the name

Frequently asked questions

Is 4GB of RAM enough for a laptop?

For a Chromebook, yes. For a Windows 11 laptop, 4GB is too little for comfortable everyday use, and 8GB is the practical minimum.

Can I play games on a laptop under R10 000?

Only light and older games. Laptops at this price use integrated graphics, and modern games need a dedicated graphics card.

Is a Chromebook good enough for a student?

For research, writing, email and online classes, yes. Check first whether the course requires any Windows-only software, because that will not run on ChromeOS.

Why do Chromebooks have so little storage?

ChromeOS is designed to keep files in cloud storage such as Google Drive, so 32GB or 64GB of built-in storage is normal. A Windows laptop needs far more, because the system and installed programs take up much of the drive.

Does a budget laptop come with Microsoft Office?

Usually not. Most Windows laptops include Windows itself, and Office is bought separately or used free in a browser. Check the product page for what is included.
